Suspended police constable Samuel Gardener was granted $100,000 bail with surety yesterday as he appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates Court charged with stealing over $29,000 worth in building material.
Dressed in a black suit, Gardener appeared composed and calm as he stood before Magistrate Nanette Forde-John in the San Fernando Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Gardener, of Cunupia, is charged with larceny of tiles, electrical wire, scaffolding pipe and primer valued at $29270.41 which belongs to contracting firm China Jiangsu.
The charge was laid indictably and he was not called upon to plead.
In a bail application attorney Subhas Panday said Gardener has one matter for soliciting pending in the Chaguanas Magistrate’s Court.
Forde-John granted bail in the sum of $100,000 with surety to be approved by a clerk of peace.
However, Panday then asked for a cash alternative, which Forde-John granted in the sum of $75,000. It means therefore Gardener can either get someone to post the $100,000 bail or deposit the cash alternative of $75,000 as bail
The prosecution claims Gardener, 28, was held along the M2 Ring Road on Sunday during a roadblock as he and another man were transporting material suspected to be stolen from the University of the West Indies south campus.
They were stopped by police around 2 am and the passenger who was travelling with Gardener reportedly exited the vehicle and ran off into the bushes.
The matter was adjourned for July 9.
